Infertility is defined as a state of not being available to reproduce. A male’s fertility or infertility is usually the result of the quality and quantity of sperm.

Causes of Male Infertility

The causes of male infertility are usually categorized as either a problem with sperm production or sperm transport.

The various causes of male infertility are

  1. Disruption of Ejaculatory Function

The sperm production maybe affected and result in decreased number of sperm because of a trauma to the testes. Smoking, high usage of alcohol, drug usage, and similar unhealthy practices may lead to this disruption too. Certain medications and supplements can also lead o this condition. A condition known as Varicocele's, wherein the veins of the testicles are large and this causes overheating which may affect the shape or number of sperms produced. Diabetes, autoimmune disorders, some infections, etc., are medical conditions that may result in testicular failure too. Sometimes, going through chemotherapy, surgery or radiation as a part of cancer treatment could also be one of the causes.

  1. Genetic Disorder

Genetic conditions such as Klinefelter’s syndrome, myotonic dystrophy, Y-chromosome microdeletion etc. may result in either decreased sperm production or no sperm production at all.

  1. Hormonal Disorders

 

The pituitary gland and the hypothalamus produce hormones with a function of maintaining normal testicular function. Conditions that affect the production of such hormones, be it increased or decreased production, might result in low sperm production. Exposure to high amounts of estrogen or testosterone could also be a hormonal cause for male infertility.

 

 

Precautions Available

Precautionary measures are always better than the treatments that you might have to go through. In order to reduce the chances of going through the condition of infertility, you might want to consider taking up some simple lifestyle changes. They include -

  • Avoiding drug usage.
  • Avoiding Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)

Dos

  • Eat food high in vitamin C and E, polyphenols, selenium, and omega-3s. These include fruits and vegetables, grains, salmon, avocados, flaxseeds etc.
  • Keep yourself hydrated.
  • Use boxers and avoid briefs for lower temperature.

Don’ts

  • Avoid smoking
  • Don’t consume alcohol extensively.
  • Stop usage of drugs.
  • Avoid eating meat like beef, turkey, and fish.
  • Don’t wear a jockstrap for a long period.
  • Avoid spending too much time in a hot tub or steam room which could raise the temperature of sperms resulting in killing them.
